Helena is a dedicated teacher with highly specialised skills. Her approach might seem quite unorthodox in a way that she involves the whole person and personality while educating which results in her pupils playing each in a very personal style. At the same time, she focuses on a thoroughly layered technical work. Having been taught by some of the great pianists and teachers of the old generation herself, she tries to pass on their values to her own students.

The core elements of her teaching are:

to use the body in the most natural and given way possible applying techniques by Alexander, M. Feldenkrais, Dalcroze and Heinrich Jacoby

to create a rich yet flexible sound with full awareness of finger play, hand shape and arm weight

to develop a dedicated musician with a humble and patient approach to work

to share the highest respect towards the music encountered

to encourage discussion by questioning what we do and why it is important how we do it

Workshop and Masterclass

Helena gives masterclasses and workshops according to ability and age. Each masterclass and workshop is differently designed but all aim to improve pianistical skills and posture but also a more relaxed attitude towards performing. There will be opportunities to work on mental strategies to overcome nerves (level 3) and a structured guidance to develop better practise habits (level 2 and 3). Every group activity will work towards the requirements they need for exams, assessments or simply for building up their musicianship: ensemble playing, sight-reading, aural training are usually associated with fear or last minute panic. Yet, these are some of the most important skills needed in making music.

Level 1 is a workshop designed for children at grade 1-2. This workshop is full of group activities based on Kodaly singing method, Dalcroze dance movement, rythmical activities inspired by Carl Orff. Although every child will get a one-to-one session, due to the age and concentration capacity, the group activies will dominate. Ensemble playing (4-6 hands) is introduced with some very easy pieces. This workshop should leave the child happy and intrigued to try something new.

Level 2 is designed for children at grade 3-5. This workshop is similar to level 1 yet all the activities are more sophisticated and the one-to-one sessions are longer and more emphasis is made on the technical and musical aspects of the pieces played.

Level 3 is for everyone at grade 6 and above. This is more a masterclass in a traditional and professional way. There will be more group discussions about the repertoire played and a more detailed approach towards style, pedal, legato technique, sound and communication between the player and the audience. This masterclass will finish with a final concert with a performance by each attendee.
